CARRAWAY NAMED GCA STAR STUDENT

Cox chosen as STAR Teacher

The 2019 STAR student, Ruth Carraway has been a student at Grace Christian Academy since she was in K3. She has maintained all A's during her tenure at GCA, and had the highest GPA overall in 9th and 10th grade.

Among her academic awards are Principal’s Honor Roll, President's Award from Educational Excellence, Woodmen of he World American History Award and the Georgia Certificate of Merit for Superior Scholastic Endeavors.

Honorary Organizations include the National Honor Society, Duke University Talent Identification Program, and National Society of High School Scholars.

In late summer, 2017, Ruth was a delegate of the Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders at the University of Massachusetts in Lowell. She also participated in a Duke TIP Academic Adventure Weekend at the University of Georgia, taking a course in virtual reality and social media psychology. In 2015, Ruth served as a Page for a day for Senator Dean Burke in the Georgia Senate.

Ruth has been a member of several clubs at GCA including the Cross Country Team, Yearbook staff, Spirit Club, and the Interact Club. She serves as Senior Class Chairman of the Interact Club. She has helped with a number of fundraising activities for her class.

Ruth has logged hundred of hours of volunteer service. She has participated in community service with the Interact Club and the Grace Church Youth Group, served on the Grace Church tech team, and assisted with children's groups since middle school. She has also been an enthusiastic volunteer at Camp Victory in Samson Alabama, working as a Camper-in-Training and Leader-in-Training.

Ruth earned her black belt in Shotojan Karate' at age 13, and is currently studying Karate’ and Kendo. She has taken piano lessons for 3 year. Ruth also enjoys art, reading, tubing, and kneeboarding.

After graduation, Carraway plans to attend Berry College, majoring in Creative Technologies with a minor in Applied Behavioral Analysis. She hopes to explore possibilities for using computer technology to provide therapies for patients who live where their needs cannot be met locally.

Ruth states that she chose Richard Cox as her STAR Teacher because he is a thorough, organized teacher who is very knowledgeable about the material he teachers. Ruth feels that the rigor and high standards of Mr. Cox's courses have been very helpful in preparing her for college. Mr. Cox, along with his wife and Science teacher, Dorinda Cox, coach the GCA Cross Country Team. The Coxes' have both been great encouragers for Ruth, helping her work hard and improve her running times. Ruth has thoroughly enjoyed her experience with the team and as a student at GCA. Cox has been chosen four of the last five years as GCA’s STAR Teacher.
