4th & 5th Grade Celebrate Johnny Appleseed Day

In recognition of Johnny Appleseed Day (Sept. 26th), the fourth and fifth graders at Grace Christian Academy took time out of their busy day to celebrate and study this great American frontier hero.  While the teacher read the book, Johnny Appleseed, the students enjoyed apple juice, apples with peanut butter and caramel, apple sauce, and apple tarts.  Students were then asked to write and retell the story of Johnny Appleseed as if they were the author.  They made a book cover for their new book and illustrated it with the same theme.  During their math and science time, the students used apples and information about apples to assist with their instructional time.  This was a special and enjoyable day for these two classes...it made learning fun!!

During a study on Eubacteria, students in Mrs. Smith Biology class collected bacteria from areas around the school.  Keyboards, faucets, door knobs, light switches, and toilets were some areas that were swabbed.  Special thanks should be given to Meridian and Danimer Scientific for providing petri dishes with agar nutrient and swabs.  After 2 weeks, students prepared slides to view with the microscopes.

6th Graders learn about Mass & Density

Understanding the connection between mass and density can be confusing.  Understanding density in liquids can be even more difficult.  The sixth grade at GCA conducted a lab while studying measurement and physical properties of matter.  Students performed the steps of the scientific method as they hypothesized, experimented, and recorded results in a lab report. Liquids that were used were shampoo, diswashing detergent, baby oil, water and corn syrup.  Liquids moved as they were poured into places by density.  The result was a tower of colorful, layered liquids.
