Lady Cougar Softball off to a Good Start

The Grace Lady Cougar softball team has had an impressive start to the 2011 season. After losing their first game to conference rival Emmanuel Lady Warriors in Dothan 16-17, the Lady Cougars have won 4 games in impressive fashion.

The Lady Cougars opened at home with a win against the Tallavana Lady Lions, 24-2. They followed up with another home victory against the Life Christian Lady Warriors of Albany, 21-11.

The Lady Cougars then traveled to Albany to take on the Byne Lady Saints. They defeated the Lady Saints 26-9. The Lady Cougars returned home to take on the Lady Eagles of Highland Christian Academy of Valdosta. They won by a score of 18-5.

Way to Go Lady Cougars!!!!

GCA Cougar Baseball

The Grace Baseball team is off to a great start. Their record is 5-2 after the first seven games, and they have shown signs of becoming a very good baseball team. The lineup has put a lot of runs across the plate led by seniors TJ Carlisle and Taylor McDonald, freshman Grant McDonald and 8th grader Bo Bailey. Catcher Bo Bailey leads the team in home runs while the McDonald brothers and TJ Carlisle are leading the team in batting average.

The Cougars pitching staff has performed very well led by senior Taylor McDonald, followed by freshman Jordan Davis and Grant McDonald, and 8th grader lefthander Anderson Bailey. This group of pitchers has found the secret to their success in throwing strikes and letting the defense do its' job. The Cougar team is quite young, and they have seen major contributions from underclassmen as well as the juniors and seniors on the roster. Kyle Harris and Brent Warr have done a stellar job in playing left and right field, while TJ Carlisle and Anderson Bailey alternate between centerfield and first base. Jim Whitehead has played a very steady second base, to help anchor an infield with Grant and Taylor McDonald at third base and shortstop. Article written by Ken Bailey.

GCA Joins GISA

Big News From Coach Murr -
On Wednesday, March 23rd, GCA was accepted as the newest member of the Georgia Independent School Association.
This change will allow GCA to compete with more established schools. Starting 2011-2012, GCA will be able to offer Jr. Pro teams for 4th - 6th graders in boys basketball, girls basketball, baseball, soccer, and cheerleading based on the interest from parents of these students.
GCA will continue to offer all of the high school sports that we have this year with the opportunity to move cross-country and some track and field events into conference competition. Because of the way the seasons run we will compete in the GISA for volleyball in the fall and continue to compete in the PCC for softball in the spring while maintaining our mostly non-conference schedule. Please visit the GISA website to review their organization and structure.

MS Host Literature Latte

The first Literature Latte was held at GCA on Tuesday, March 22, 2011. Over 40 students from the seventh and eighth grade Literature classes presented their works: including shadow boxes, illustrations, original poems, essays and original haiku's. Mrs. Kathy Bennett and Mrs. Delrose Betts collaborated on this impressive event. Parents, grandparents and friends were treated to a "coffeehouse" atmosphere complete with coffee, cappuccino, hot chocolate and loads of goodies. The students took the stage one at a time to make their presentations.

Mrs. Kathy Bennett's eighth graders just finished studying "Where the Red Fern Grows," and students had the option to create a shadow box or illustration of a scene or to write an essay, a series of haiku's, or a poem. Mrs. Bett's seventh grade class has just completed a unit on poetry. Each of her students created an original poem which they then presented to the group.

8th Grade Explore Chemistry

The 8th grade students enjoyed the chemical reactions demonstrated by Mr. Van Trump, Mr. Faircloth, and Mr. Lonsdale from Danimer Scientific and Meridian. Students were able to see the chemical properties of elements as they reacted with other substances. The Law of Conservation of Mass was also discussed as reactions were done. Furthermore, the importance of catalysts and inhibitors in a chemical reaction were shown as well. The experiments followed a study on the periodic table and chemical reactions. Some experiments included making Hydrogen balloons and lighting them and dropping chunks of sodium in water. It made for quite an explosive morning!
